This Short Course in Mindful Self-Compassion (SC-MSC) is a gentle, 6-week introduction to the transformative practice of self-compassion. Adapted from the research-based 8-week Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) program, SC-MSC was created by Kristin Neff, PhD—pioneering researcher in self-compassion—and Christopher Germer, PhD, a leader in the integration of mindfulness, compassion, and psychotherapy.
Most of us naturally offer kindness and care to the people we love when they’re struggling. But what happens when we are the ones hurting? What would it feel like to turn that same compassion inward—to meet ourselves with understanding, warmth, and support in our moments of pain, failure, or self-doubt?
Self-compassion begins with a simple shift in awareness: recognizing that you, too, are worthy of care. It is the practice of comforting and encouraging ourselves when life feels hard, rather than meeting our struggles with harsh self-criticism. By connecting with the compassion we so freely offer others and including ourselves in that circle of care, we begin to build a more supportive relationship with ourselves—and, in turn, deepen our compassion for others.
Rooted in mindfulness, SC-MSC helps participants cultivate self-compassion as an inner resource for greater emotional resilience and wellbeing. A growing body of research shows that self-compassion is strongly linked to lower levels of anxiety and depression, healthier habits, stronger relationships, and a greater ability to cope with life’s inevitable challenges. It is an inner strength that allows us to meet ourselves—and our lives—with greater courage, clarity, and kindness.
The beautiful truth is that self-compassion can be learned by anyone—even if these skills were not modeled for us growing up.
This program welcomes members of the general public and is grounded in the values of equity, diversity, inclusiveness, and belonging. No meditation experience is necessary. All are welcome.
Each session includes short talks, experiential exercises, group discussion, and simple home practices to support your learning. SC-MSC offers an opportunity to explore how you typically respond when difficulties arise and to discover practical tools for becoming a kinder, more supportive companion to yourself.
